Kilometer 0 in Madrid: Real Casa del Correos Landmark

Kilometer 0 in Madrid was a point of reference marker for distance from Real Casa de Correos. The building can be found at one of the prominent squares in Madrid – Puerta del Sol. Accessing Puerta del Sol can be easily be done from Gran Via.

Madrid sites and landmarks. Real Casa del Correos.
Real Casa del Correos

It was small and unassuming. It was so nondescript that we had to ask about its location to some workers at Real Casa del Correos. I thought we were the only ones looking for it. Some moments later, we overheard some other tourist asking about it.

Puerta del Sol in Madrid also has other landmarks: the statue of King Carlos III on horseback, el oso y el madroño, and the clock tower of Puerta del Sol.

King Carlos III was regarded as the most successful European ruler of his generation.

The statue of the bear and the strawberry tree (el oso y el madroño) is a statue that is representing the coat of arms for Madrid. Creating the statue was a task that was undertaken by artist Antonio Navarro Santafé.

The clock can be seen on the tower on top of Real Casa del Correos. We have noticed that clocks commonly adorn the towers of prominent buildings in Europe. The clock in towers in Italy looked even fancier.
