Day Visit to Jemaa El Fna Square

This day was really the day that we were supposed to tour Marrakesh with the tour group. Yesterday, we took it upon ourselves to see parts of Marrakesh on a self guided exploration. It was a fruitful experience! This day, we were looking forward to a day visit to Jemaa El Fna square.

A busy street scene with pedestrians waiting at a crosswalk, surrounded by greenery and palm trees. Several people are gathered near a bus stop, and a motorcycle and cars are visible in the foreground.

We began our walk from Avenue Jemaa El Fna to the square through the closed off walkway. Pylons were blocking access to vehicular traffic. Pedestrian traffic was allowed to flow freely. Vehicles were only authorized for specific purposes.

The square was very active. It was pulsing with activity. Tourists, locals, vendors, entertainers, and stalls were crowding the square. The snake charmers were busy with their pet snakes. The guys with the monkeys were too scary to approach because the monkey can potentially become aggressive.

The fruit juice stalls were there. Did they ever leave or go to sleep? There were, we think, fortune tellers, sitting on small benches and surrounded by their cards. Vendors of trinkets and souvenirs were tending to their wares. Food stalls! Ah, the food stalls! Their aroma smell so good! And, there were the big restaurants, on all corners of the square, advertising their specialty food. We were thinking, there might be a Tagine clay pot there somewhere, slowly simmering its meat, carbs, and vegetables. The thought alone made us crave it!

What was never ever lacking in Jemaa El Fna Square were the colors and textures. There was a kaleidoscope of colors everywhere. Each color was of different texture.

Once outside the square, we were very tempted to take the horse drawn carriage back to the hotel. It was slow but we saw a good way to take in the sights of Marrakesh unhurriedly. We thought hard. Nah! It was easier just to take the bus back to the hotel and crash in bed.
