Old Town Edinburgh

Edinburgh -Medieval Manhattan

Edinburgh Old Town was looking fabulous! It was medieval and yet modern in its ways. The confines of the city’s wall forced the construction of high rise buildings. Today, our local guide called the high rise buildings as “The Medieval Manhattan”.

We arrived at Edinburgh after stopping by Lake Windermere and High Yewdale. Everybody was eager to start exploring the fabulous city. David, our tour guide, took us as a group and gave us a quick orientation of Old Town and New Town.

St. Giles Cathedral

A local guide came aboard as the tour bus was driving around the main thoroughfares. Significant, historical, and important landmarks of the city were pointed out by the local guide. Some useful tips, like local restaurants, attractions, directions toward Edinburgh Castle and Holyroodhouse Palace, the Parliament, were given. This was in anticipation that we will be exploring the city on our own. It was also impressive to know that important men of science, technology and arts, like Alexander Graham Bell (the telephone), Alexander Fleming (Penicillin), Sean Connery (actor), Joseph Lister (antiseptic in surgery), all hailed from this fabulous city.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, the main fortification of the city, was our starting point to our self-guided tour. We ended up walking and exploring Princes Street from the castle to Holyroodhouse Palace.

Holyroodhouse Palace

There were a lot of other interesting places that we did not see due to time constraint. Three or four days in Edinburgh may be an acceptable amount of time to explore other areas.

  1. Edinburgh Castle looks beautiful. We haven’t been to Scotland, but it’s high on our list. Good to know that you need a few days to more fully explore and enjoy Edinburgh.
