Exploring the Dom Luis I Bridge: A Porto Landmark

Photographs of Dom Luis I bridge. The construction of the bridge was completed in 1886. Its design was compared to the Eiffel Tower in Paris by virtue of the relationship of its designer to the designer of the tower.

We walked the span of the upper deck, where most pedestrians and some cars cross, to reach the southern banks. The lower deck allowed for cars, trucks, and some pedestrian crossing. The bridge connected the northern bank of the city of Porto, Portugal to the southern bank of the city of Vila Nova de Gaia.

A view from the northern bank of Porto

The northern bank of the city of Porto, Portugal offered a good view of the bridge. A lot of people though think that the southern bank of the city of Vila Nova de Gaia offered a better view.

We arrived at the southern bank of the Duoro river where we were guided to a port wine tasting at Caves Calem. It was an interesting experience. We learned more about port wines.
