First Memorable Visit To The Land Down Under

The flight to Melbourne

Melbourne was a long plane flight from Houston, Texas. A short layover was at Auckland, New Zealand. There was only enough time for the airline to prepare for the next flight to Melbourne. Not enough time to get out of the airport and do some exploration of nearby areas. It was a relief that we were able to walk around and stretch our limbs.  The Houston to Auckland flight with Air New Zealand wasn’t so bad as we were able to book our seats ahead of time.  My wife and I sat next to each other in a two-seat row.

The connecting flight

It was easy transferring from the arrival gate to the pre-departure area. There were enough chairs and tables around the pre-departure area. Food choices were varied enough for some snacks and drinks. During the wait, we started talking and wondering why we didn’t plan for a few days stop at New Zealand.  Maybe it will be a good idea next time to explore New Zealand.

The weather was bright and sunny in Melbourne. The welcoming committee – Bee, my sister, and friend, Bernie – were waiting for us as we made our way out of the airport.

Sightseeing was priority and the latticed roadway architecture on the road going to Dandenong was already eye-catching! People probably take this sight for granted as they see it all the time but I see it as amazing and pleasing to the eye.  The Melbourne skyline was also visible from the freeway but it was quite difficult to get a good view from a moving vehicle.

Dandenong Square

The suburb community where we were staying was quiet and pleasant. There were rows of houses and then there was Dandenong square – one of the hubs of community activity.  Shops lined the square and people of all ages mingled.  The shops were selling enough goods to satisfy our household needs. It was impressing to note the diversity of ethnicity of people in the square. I found the experience unique.
