The castle was constructed in the 17th century. It was a fortification to defend against Spanish forces as well as French, Dutch, and British corsairs.
The moniker Castelo do Quiejo or Cheese Castle came about because the locals thought that the castle was built on a rock that resembled a wheel of cheese. Inside, a small military museum of weapons and exhibits was available to view. It also offered a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Ha, love that it was called Cheese Castle because the rock looked like a wheel of cheese.
