white dome, blue dome, bell tower

Iconic Greek domes and bells

A photograph of the iconic Greek domes and bells. The church domes and bell tower scene repeats itself all over Greece.

We gained knowledge while on a tour in Mykonos. As mentioned, the iconic Greek domes and bell towers can be seen all over Greece. We saw it the moment we landed in the island of Santorini. What we didn’t realize was that there was significance in the color of the domes. Most churches and chapels are privately owned. The color of the church dome shows the trade of the owner. A red dome signifies trade in farm and animal products. A blue dome indicates trade in fish and sea products. A white dome means lack of representation in either farm/animal or sea products.

It was quite interesting to be learning as a traveling couple in Greece.
