
Karlstor is one of the medieval city gates in Munich. It is on the western side of the city on a large square called Karlsplatz.

We learned two interesting historical facts while standing on Karlsplatz and looking at Karlstor.
First, it is one of the remaining medieval gates of the city’s second layer of fortification that was built in the 14th century.
Second, Karlsplatz was not a popular name for the large square where Karlstor stands. The local nickname is “Stachus”. It was named after a popular 18th century pub, “Beim Stachus”, and in defiance to an unpopular Elector Karl Theodor.
