Our city guide brought us to one of the main gates of the Kasbah of Tangier. Here, we were introduced to our local guide, Youssef Chebaa Hadri, who guided us on a slow walk through the narrow passages of the Kasbah.
The Kasbah, a historic fortified citadel and a lively neighborhood, was built on the highest point of the old Medina of Tangier. It was a military fort, a stronghold, and a former residence of the Sultan. For many centuries, it served as a lookout point over the Strait of Gibraltar.
A guided walk to anywhere would not be complete without, at least, a short introduction of the place. The introduction was delivered both mild-mannerly and eloquently by Youssef. However, at this time, probably because of the number of places that we have seen, and fatigue creeping in from travel, we managed to comprehend only most of the information. Looking back, we wish we were better prepared with research and planning before embarking on an exploration of Tangier.
Youssef turned out to be a published author of two novellas, an outspoken figure of the arts and media, and a local guide for the Kasbah.
The Kasbah has four main gates – Bab Haha, Bab el-Assa, Bab el-Kasbah, and Bab al-Bahr. We entered through Bab el-Kasbah to start our exploration of the Kasbah.
