Place D'Arms Montreal

Place d’Armes Montréal

Place d’Armes Montréal was the next sight that we were visiting after St. Patrick’s Basilica. The sight is a square located in the old Montreal quarter between Saint Jacques and Notre Dame streets. It was interesting to know that there were a lot of places in Canada named Place d’Armes. Basically, the squares were named as such because they were places of staging for military events.

Place d’Armes Montréal was busy. It was filled with people, mostly obviously tourists, who were mingling around, sitting on the benches, admiring the Maisonneuve monument, and generally heading towards Notre Dame Basilica.

It was disappointing that we arrived late in the afternoon. We already missed viewing Notre Dame Basilica in Paris, France because it was under renovation from a recent fire. Then, it was disappointing that there were so many people inside the basilica that we opted to visit on some other time. There was not much to view outside either. Around half of the facade was covered with scaffolding.

There were entertainers in the square who were trying to pick up a few coins. The lady in the photograph was dancing to some form of ethnic dance. There was a guy before her who was playing a musical instrument. Then she was followed by a guy playing an electric guitar. All in all, it was providing a festive atmosphere to the square. We were thinking that adding a few booths selling candy, ice cream, or popcorn could have completed the fiesta scene. We just don’t know whether it will sit well with the local authorities.
