Stone faces outside of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia.

A quick search revealed that the stone faces on buildings serve as either spiritual protection, symbolism and education, or aesthetics. If it were gargoyles, they probably were for water management. Grotesques, on the other hand, were decorative, often whimsical or terrifying.
