It was luggage-out-of-the-hotel-room and loaded into the tour bus by 0730 in the morning. Breakfast was kind of somber. We were thinking that we were winding down on our tour of Morocco. Casablanca was the last city that we will be part of the tour. Then, we were on our own.
It was a long ride to Casablanca. Most were quiet and napping through the road trip. Were they thinking of the same thing? Maybe.
It was surprising how much we have learned during this trip. It was our first time to be in Africa. Our perception of Africa was myopic. Before coming to Morocco, our thoughts of Africa was probably the Serengeti. It was hard to imagine at first that we were going to Morocco in Africa.
Our exposure to three different kinds of culture – Amazigh (Berber), Arab, and African – was profound. It not only opened our eyes but also showed us the amazing qualities of other cultures.
Snacks were served which lightened up the mood in the bus. Food always helps!
Our plan was to do a self-guided tour of Casablanca. We were also thinking of checking out the night life. Not the night life, you know. We wanted to see how Casablanca looks like at night.

The first trip I ever made out of the US was to Africa. I went to Liberia as a Peace Corps Volunteer right after I graduated from Berkeley in 1965. It was a cross-cultural experience that has guided me through my life in many ways. My only North Africa experience was a river boat trip up the Nile two years ago. Peggy and I loved it.

It was a great success! Now, if only we were able to visit the Blue City and Moroccan Sahara, it would have been greater 😊!

Always best to save something for ‘next time,’ George. You never want to run out of excuses to travel and explore. Even though Peggy and I have made it to Greece on three different occasions, We never made it to Nafplio, Olympia or Delphi. We are now in the middle of correcting that deficiency!
One of my favourite things about travelling is how much you learn about a place, its history and the people. We’ve never been to Africa before. Perhaps someday.
Africa is a highly recommended place to visit. At least, for now, North Africa. Learn as much as you can about it before embarking on a journey. Our travel experience taught us a lot of things about North African culture that we are familiar but don’t really know.
We also learned another thing. We can be in Tarifa, Spain, cross over to Tangier, Morocco via high speed ferry, tour Tangier and the Blue City, then be back to Tarifa, Spain by the end of the day.
