The sanctuary of Christ the King, Lisbon

Visiting Cristo Rei: Lisbon’s Inspiring Sanctuary in Almada

A sanctuary dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ in Almada, Portugal, featuring a statue that stands 360 feet (110 meters) tall and overlooks the city of Lisbon. The monument is said to have been inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

We found the easiest way to reach the sanctuary was by taking an Uber from outside Time Out Market. The ride took only a few minutes thanks to light–moderate traffic. The crowd at the sanctuary was also pleasantly moderate, which may or may not be typical for that time of day, and allowed us to explore the area at a relaxed pace.

A public park featuring a large modern sculpture resembling a cross, grassy area, and walking paths filled with people enjoying the view of the waterfront under a clear blue sky.

There was an option to take a lift to the top of the statue for a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. We decided to decline. Instead, we took the opportunity to lounge on the grassy area and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
