Walking Along Rue Bahia Bab Mellah

It was at the corner leading to Rue Bahia Bab Mellah that we had to get off the tour bus. The road was too narrow. Our destination today was to visit Bahia Palace.

It was an interesting road. It took us to the historic district of Bahia Bab Mellah. An intersection that was full of Moroccan life. The intersection between Bahia Palace and the gate of the Mellah (the ancient Jewish quarter) hence the name Bab (gate) Mellah.

Walking single file

We caught a glimpse of Bab Mellah as a group of tourists was walking single file. Just like us. We must have looked just like them from the eyes of locals. We didn’t visit the Mellah that day.

Leather Goods

There were stalls on the left side of the road. Textiles, leather goods, spices, coffee shops, and a lot of other businesses were open. As usual, it was an explosion of colors and textures. Just like the souks!

Textiles

There was an open space right beyond where the horses and carriages park. It was an open public space. A sort-of secluded space where anybody can spend some time away from pedestrian and motor traffic.

A horse-drawn carriage parked in a plaza surrounded by palm trees, with a man seated in the carriage and people walking in the background.

The short walk along the road gave us a microcosm of life in Morocco!

Random photographs of our travels. Memories found and captured in a photograph.
