The Al Attarine madrasa (school) in Fes, Morocco was once a religious school under the Marinid dynasty (1244-1465). It is now a historical and tourist spot in the middle of Al Attarine souk (spice and perfume market) near the Al Qarawiyyin mosque.

Our tour guide made us aware that he was leading us to the renowned school. We entered the school through its L-shaped entrance. A doorman opened the Marinid style, intricately carved door that was further leading us to the central courtyard.

In the middle of the courtyard was a water fountain whose water lay still. It must have been hypnotic to listen to its flowing water sound in the past. The fountain was surrounded by the distinct Zellij tilework. The lower wall was laid with intricate geometric mosaic pattern. The upper wall was showing carved cedar wood panels and detailed stucco work.

The upper floor was with a wrap around balcony that was looking into the central courtyard. Several rooms served as lodging for students who studied in this madrasa.
