Jamaica Beach

Escape to Jamaica Beach: A Relaxing Retreat on the Texas Coast

Jamaica beach is not located in the country of Jamaica. It is a beach on the west side of Galveston, Texas.

Galveston is in the southern portion of Texas and facing the Gulf of Mexico. We go to Galveston whenever we feel the need to smell the salty water, listen to the crashing waves, and feel the salty air on our faces. It is a five hour drive but is worth the trip. We grew up in the islands and we had access to the beach simply by riding our bicycles. You can probably understand why we have the inner need to be by the beach every so often.

We discovered Jamaica Beach quite by accident. Reaching the waterfront in Galveston is as easy as following southbound Interstate 45. This is where most people go simply because it is the most convenient. There are restaurants, hotels and motels, entertainment areas, and the pier. Galveston though has been known to not have the greatest beach. Seaweeds from the Gulf of Mexico keeps on getting washed ashore. This gives the beach a “dirty” look. The maintenance crew does a wonderful job of keeping the beach clean.

It was on one particular day that we decided to drive the length of Galveston along the beach. We saw a few trucks entering a sandy road and decided to follow. There we found Jamaica Beach! Unlike most beaches, we were able to park our vehicle close to the shore. There were no commercial umbrellas or huts lining the beach. It was simply a beach!

On this particular day, we were so happy to smell the salty air, listen to crashing of the waves, and feel the salty wind on our faces!
