It was getting close to lunchtime when we finished our guided tour of the town center. We had already scoped out a few places where we wanted to eat. We decided to explore a bit more first. We knew that once we were full and relaxed after lunch, we’d be too lazy to keep wandering around.
Our group, each one eager to explore a different part of town, dispersed in front of the main parish church of the historic town. Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria da Devesa was built on the site of a smaller 14th century chapel. The church, with its Baroque and Neoclassical styles, became on of the largest building in the Alto Alentejo area in the 19th century.
We did a short visit to the church. A short prayer in front of a lit candle sufficed as our homage.
