Gran Via, translated to English as the Great Way or Great Road, is a major cultural and shopping boulevard in Madrid. The boulevard start from the corner of Plaza de España and extend southeast all the way to its intersection with Calle Alcalá.
The photograph shows Edificio Vitalicio, a building that was designed by Fernando de Escondrillas y López de Alburquerque. The smaller street on the right side of the building is Calle de Leganitos. Gran Via is on the left side of the building.
This photograph was taken while still standing on the wide sidewalk of Calle de la Princesa. A spot from across Hotel Riu and in front of Plaza de España. Within a short walking distance were several other tourist attractions including Palacio Real de Madrid.
Our leisurely walk started from this point to explore Gran Via. We wanted to know why it holds the distinction of being the heartbeat of Madrid. Along the way, we did find the cultural heartbeat. We met people from all walks of life, viewed the facade of several art theaters, walked through the chaos of a down-to-earth market for local fares, walked by the frontage of several hotels, and window-shopped a bit. The moving crowd of Plaza del Callao attracted us to follow its flow towards Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. We spent an hour or two of delightful immersion at Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor before heading back to our hotel.

This brings back memories of when we visited Madrid a few years ago. Unfortunately the Puerta del Sol was mostly under construction. But we’re still happy with how much else we got to see in and around the vibrant city.
