There were four things to do while at Valencia’s Plaza del Mercado.
First, architecture sightseeing. The stunning architecture of Gothic and Art Nouveau design can be found everywhere. It was showcasing the city’s rich history and artistic heritage. Notable examples included the Central Market where you can admire its intricate ironwork and vibrant ceramic tiles. The Silk Exchange, a remarkable building that reflected the prosperity of the silk trade in the past. And, the Church of Santos Juanes, an architectural gem that featured magnificent religious artworks.
Second, browsing through the Central Market was an experience like no other. The Central Market has been the large 20th century modernist glass, iron, and ceramic building of the plaza. It also housed more than a thousand stalls with fresh seafood, meat, fruits, and local delicacies. Each one offered unique flavors and aromas that enticed visitors to wander through its bustling aisles. Local artisans proudly display handmade crafts.
Third, eating and drinking played a vital role in the vibrant atmosphere of the plaza. Tapas bars and cozy cafes can be found all around the bustling square. Each offering a unique selection of local delicacies and refreshing beverages to enjoy. There was something for every palate from savory olives and delectable cured meats to aromatic coffees and fruity sangrias.
Lastly, people watching. This was the activity that we indulged the most. We walked through the plaza and immersed ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere while observing the diverse crowd as they passed by. There were families enjoying ice cream, couples laughing and sharing intimate moments, and groups of friends animatedly discussing their day. The sounds of joy filled the air, punctuated by the occasional street performer captivating an audience with their talent. It was fascinating to consider the stories behind each person we saw, from the elderly gentleman feeding the pigeons to the children playing tag near the fountain, all contributing to the lively tapestry of life unfolding before us.

It’s pretty neat how eating and drinking seem to be a focal point in many plazas in Europe. You’re right, it’s a great place to people watch and enjoy the architecture.
The Central Market sounds like a place I could happily hang out at for days! Maybe even weeks.
Yes, that’s what we thought! But, that was also our first time to be in Valencia. We can only follow the tour guide around or else be left behind by the tour group. We actually discussed going back to Valencia to explore it more the next time around.
Certainly one of the challenges of being with a tour guide! We visited the Scottish Highlands on a CIE bus tour this summer. We had a great guide, but there were some places where we would have spent more time and others where we could have spent less.
