Did you know that Hercules divided the continents of Europe and Africa? Well, it was written on the signage when we visited the Hercules Cave. The cave was where Hercules rested after achieving his feat.
Our guide brought us to Hercules Cave. He parked by the side of a cul de sac and said, “Hercules Cave is that way”. So we made our way to the top of a hill. Then it was down a slope to the mouth of the cave.
We paid an entrance fee to go inside and explore the cave. The line of people started before the entrance and continued down to the bottom of the cave. It was slow progress going down the stairs. Along the way, there were a variety of items on display or for sale – trinkets and souvenirs. Even Hercules himself guarded the cave against the lion.
There was good business at the bottom of the cave. More items to browse and buy. More random items on display.
The hole in the ground was a wonderful archeological site that catered to tourists with their boutique items and souvenirs.

All the souvenirs on display make the experience a bit disingenuous. Not sure I’d be into that.
Well, we thought, we can’t have everything the way we want it. We didn’t know. Tangier was a side trip. Not researched. Not planned. We felt like we paid an entrance fee to browse through a souvenir shop instead of browsing through a preserved historical and archeological site. Lesson learned, again!
