It was in the 12th century that the Amoravid dynasty started building the Marrakesh wall. It was to fortify the Medina. The wall became 19 kilometers long, standing at a height of 6 to 9 meters tall, and had the thickness of around 2 meters. In some places, especially around the towers, it was even thicker!
We were standing outside Bab Agnaou, after our visit with the Herborist, while waiting for the tour bus to pick us up. We were facing the massive wall of Marrakesh.

The wall had the reddish tinge of clay terracota. It was made of mud, rocks, straw, and other materials to make it stick and create a solid structure. It was gradually rammed into place. Layer by layer. Section by section. Until the wall was formed. That wall has been standing for centuries! Dynasties have come and gone. Yet, the wall remained in place.
The longer that we stayed in Morocco, the more that we saw, the more that we were amazed by its history and achievements.
We will be seeing more tomorrow of the Red City. For the moment, we were heading to our hotel for the night and prepare for another day.
We cherish the random photographs of our travels. These are memories found and captured in a photograph.

Impressive to hear how thick the wall is. And it’s pretty amazing that it’s still standing after all these years. Goes to show how good their construction and craftsmanship was even without modern day tools and technology.
