Notre Dame Basilica was standing tall and square from our viewpoint at Place d’Armes. A prime example of Gothic Revival style. It is truly a jewel at Montreal’s Old Port. This was architectural ambition that was brought to life by the faith of its builders and parishioners.

We tried viewing the full grandeur of Notre Dame basilica in Montréal. Except, ongoing repairs had scaffoldings wrapping around one of its towers. We couldn’t go in the first time either. It was late and there were so many people in the basilica. We gave up with the hope that we will be back to witness its full grandeur.

It was on our last day in Canada that made for perfect timing to return to Notre Dame Basilica in Montréal. Our only itinerary before heading for the airport. There were already a lot of people inside the basilica. A few were respectfully genuflecting, making a sign of the cross on their body, and kneeling down in prayer. Most other people were just wandering around the basilica. Some were in tour groups as their tour guide were speaking to them about the basilica on their earphones.

Anybody can say, “The basilica is magnificent with its Gothic Revival architecture”. It was our experience and opinion that magnificent can only be said upon entering the basilica.

The interior was truly captivating and awe inspiring! The naves, aisles, columns, high ribbed ceilings, and walls were showing incredibly ornate decorations. Vibrant colors of different hue were adorning all corners from floor to ceiling. The high arched altar was a sight to behold. Master-crafted wood carvings and stained-glass windows were also attracting great attention. Everything was truly magnificent! We spent the next hour in the basilica just admiring everything. It was a great experience.

We didn’t let ourselves forget that one thing we do when visiting a new place of worship is to offer a prayer of thanks. Lighting a candle too. We did both and it made us extremely happy!
