Locally sourced limestone and basalt made up the beautifully decorated pavements and roads of Portugal. We saw this in Aveiro, Portugal as we were walking around the village. The black and white stones were cut and masterfully laid out in intricate patterns. This was also true for most of Portugal as we discovered later on while continuing to tour the country.

The practice of utilizing these durable stones has been going on since the 15th century. Initially, it was functional but later on became more artistic. Each area usually has a unique design that reflects the character of the community.

It was very sturdy and attractive but we found walking a bit difficult. The stones created uneven surfaces that can be a challenge to good balance while walking.
