The Funicular of Bom Jesus do Monte in Tenões, Portugal

There are two ways to go up the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte: walk up the Monumental Stairway or ride the Funicular. We opted both.

Let us explain.

“What do you think, the stairs or the funicular?”

“How many steps up the stairs?”

“573!”

“Nah, let’s take the funicular!”

The funicular has been in operation since 1882. It is water-powered and one of the oldest in operation in the world. It has also been historic in its service to all the past pilgrims visiting the sanctuary.

It was an easy ride going up the hill to get us to the front of the sanctuary. Once in front of the sanctuary, we looked at a panoramic view of the City of Braga. We also looked down on the Monumental Stairway and looked at each other.

“We have to go down these steps. We cannot miss out on this experience!”

“You know we have to go back up, right?”

“Of course, let’s go!”
