A photograph of a frota (fleet) of Moliceiros docked along the Central Canal. Somehow, this reminded us of a fleet of gondolas that we also saw at the Grand Canal of Venice.
The Moliceiros now serve a different purpose. It was built and developed in the 19th century as a vessel to navigate the shallow waterways of the Central Canal. Seaweeds clog the waterways if it were not collected using the Moliceiros. Mechanizing the process rendered the use of the Moliceiros unnecessary. Now, the brightly painted vessels ferry tourists along the waterways.
