We are often asked, “what will you be when you retire?”. This is similar to the question also often asked when we were young, “what will you be when you grow up?”.

Now that we are at the age of retirement, the response is often, “I’m just going to be a Hobo”. But, do you really want to be a hobo?

A short passage of a travel writing compilation by Robert MacFarlane in the book, The Best American Travel Writing 2020, gave a basic understanding of the difference between a hobo, a tramp, and a bum.

“A ‘hobo is an itinerant worker; someone who travels and finds work. A ‘tramp’ travels, but mostly does not work. A ‘bum’ neither travels nor works.” – Jeff MacGregor, The Last of the Great American Hobos.

With this, we came to realize that we just want to be a tramp, not a hobo.
