Welcome to Marrakesh, Morocco – the Red City!

One of the four imperial cities of Morocco together with Fes, Meknes, and Rabat. What was then the most fitting way to be introduced to the city? Enter the Medina through the famous Bab Agnaou!

Bab, meaning “the gate”. Agnaou, with three possible meanings. First, from the Amizigh (Berber) language of “the mute”, one who cannot speak the Berber language. Second, a Berber term referring to the Black People because the gate faces the subsaharan desert. Third, “ram without horns” after the gate lost the two defensive towers flanking the gate. The gate has the bluish-gray tinge of the sandstone from which it was carved. The characteristic central horseshoe arch was present. Floral designs, geometric shapes, and Kufic calligraphy made it highly decorative.
