The Royal House of Avis, the second royal dynasty to rule Portugal, oversaw Portugal during its rise to power. The Age of Discovery propelled Portugal into a major world power.

The sword, intertwined with the cross, was carved on limestone on the back of the Monument of the Discoveries. It symbolized the intertwining of the religious faith, military order, and the global reach of the Portuguese empire.
