We stood among the crowd by the ledge of the viewpoint of Miradouro da Graca. The terracotta rooftops, rippling down the hillside like sun-baked waves, were catching the light from the afternoon sun. Shades of rust and amber, reflected from the rooftops, framed the laundry-draped balconies, narrow cobbled alleys, and distant church towers like a timeless patchwork of a photograph.
The iconic red clay roof coverings has defined the skyline of Portugal since the Roman times. Local clay was carefully shaped by artisans to provide an interlocking layer of roof tiles that reflected the sun’s rays and deflected the raindrops.
The viewpoint not only displayed the terracotta rooftops but also a panoramic view of São Jorge Castle and the distant Tagus river.
