A photograph of one side of the Agafay desert of Morocco. The red poppy and the cultivated field betrays the bareness of the desert.
Our little corner of Agafay desert was a short distance ride from the Argan Oil Cooperative. It was around 20 miles south of Marrakesh, Morocco. We were faced with acres upon acres of a stone desert. A desert lacking the smooth, sandy surface of the Sahara. From a distance, the wind swept surface did have the look of a sandy desert. On closer inspection, Agafay desert was dust, rocky outcrops, dry beds, and patchy vegetation.

We were soaking in the scene of the stone desert. The dry desert air was somehow mixed with the sweet smell of distant rain. Desert dust, riding the wind gusts, were gradually clinging to our clothing. The feeling of wanting to sneeze was always present.
There were rolling hills at a distance. Quad bikes, looking like groups of ants in single file, were navigating the slopes of the hills. There was an enclosure of camels nearby. We clearly heard their snorting and some bellowing. Their smell betrayed their presence too.
Our planned activities here were a quad bike ride through the rocky surface, a camel ride, a traditional Tagine dinner, listen to live traditional Moroccan music, and a fire show.
