Salzburg, Austria Day Trip

We intentionally missed going to Salzburg, Austria because we chose to stay in Passau, Germany. That was right after we went through the River Cruise Hiccup.

Marienplatz in Munich had a lot of things going on but it was the Christmas market that occupied all of our time. There were a lot of old architecture and old historical places to visit. Most of them were clustered around Marienplatz and it became a blur after a while of walking around the place. The Cathedral of our Dear Lady was definitely one of the places that was worth our time.

It was a cool and sunny day as we hopped on the train. We decided that we were not going to miss Salzburg this time. It was, after all, not all the time that we can go to a popular place. In close to two hours, we were getting off the central train station and walking towards Mirabell Palace and Gardens.

The Steps behind Pegasus fountain

We never could imagine that, after sixty years, the popularity of The Sound of Music fame did not waver. The throng of people was building up as the day wore on. We tried to imagine parts of the movie as we were looking at the actual filming site.

Walking to the downtown area did not spare us from the throng of people. Everybody was seemingly heading towards the same direction.

Getreidegasse

The crowd brought us to Getreidegasse (Grain Alley). A shopping area and the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. At the end of the alley was the Burgerspitalkirche St. Blasius.

Bürgerspitalkirche St. Blasius (Citizens’ Hospital Church of St. Blasius)

As our practice while traveling, we try to visit local churches especially the ones with unique architecture. However, we could not find the entrance to this church and ended up skipping our visit.

Mozart’s Birthplace

This lady was mysterious! She sat in front of the signage stating, “Mozart’s Birthplace”. She was not deterred nor bothered by the multitude of people taking a photograph of the signage. We were thinking, maybe she was waiting for someone or she was hired to sit in front of the signage!

We ended our visit to Salzburg by dropping by their Christmas market. It was smaller compared to Vienna and Munich. It still had similar things commonly found in Christmas markets here.
